NEWSLETTER NUMBER 126 JUNE 2020
Results and Successes.
Very few of us, if any, could have foreseen the havoc and disruption that the Covic pandemic would cause, even those blessed with 20/20 vision! In an effort to return to a semblance of ‘normality’ – albeit a very different one, it is important to celebrate the efforts of the children who achieved success in their shooting last term. So, congratulations to the following…….
To Terra Nova, and their coach Michelle Vincent, for achieving two new record scores. Firstly in the St David’s shield competition and secondly in the Cadet pairs U12 cup (Mostyn House trophy).
Please see the amended results to last term’s St Patrick’s shield competition. This sees the trophy now shared between Holmewood House and Feltonfleet with the tied score of 570 that each school originally achieved. This was due to an appeal raised over a technicality with the previously published results.
‘Top Shooter’ results.
With no shooting possible this term, the customary ‘shoot off’ of the top ten rifle and air rifle individuals did not go ahead. It was therefore decided to award the prizes on the basis of the highest average achieved on their competition cards shot this year. So congratulations to the top three in both category and especially the two winners, Tiggy Tutt (St Andrew’s) and George Robinson (Terra Nova). Results were as follows:
Rifle. Air Rifle.
1st Tiggy Tutt (St Andrew’s) 1st George Robinson (Terra Nova)
2nd Harry Shouksmith (St Andrew’s) 2nd Harry Mitchell (Terra Nova)
3rd Annabel Ferguson (Feltonfleet) 3rd Eve Robinson (Sedbergh Prep)
Please note that the rifle results incorporated all the scores achieved in the UFL competition as well as the St Patrick’s shield.
‘Pardoe Prize’ winner.
Congratulations also to Harriet Mills (Holmewood House) who is this year’s winner of the Pardoe Prize. Zoe Moir (Feltonfleet) and Dan Clark (St Andrew’s) also achieved a score of 96 in the competition too but Harriet’s card was adjudged the best one by means of graduated gauges ( 97 with 0.25 gauge).
Farewell.
This term sees the retirement of Hylton Adcroft, Head coach at Feltonfleet School. Hylton has coached there since 2003 and must have clocked up thousands of miles in that time since, for most of those years he drove up from West Wales to Surrey each week in order to teach his youngsters; a round trip of some 400 miles! I hope he was claiming ‘Performance related pay’ as well as his mileage allowance as his coaching resulted in no less than ten St Patrick’s shield victories and eleven Lord Roberts Cup wins. His results in the U12 Pardoe cup were even more impressive with his charges winning it no less than 20 times between 2009 and 2020.
Hylton has a wealth of experience in all shooting disciplines and ran the sport at Wellington College for many years with no less than 30 of his former pupils gaining their place, as Athelings, in one of the British Cadet Rifle Teams. I am glad that whilst he is giving up his coaching he has agreed to remain on the PSRA Committee a little longer where his knowledge and advice have been very much appreciated.
Sad news.
Dr Roger Sawyer was a long term supporter of the Association and served as our Hon. Treasurer for 25 years. He ran the shooting at Bembridge School where he also served as its Headmaster. He was instrumental in some of our trophies and initiated the donation from Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran which resulted in the shields we used to award in our rifle and air rifle ‘divisions.’ He also donated the ’Sawyer cup’ which is still awarded to the runners up in the St David’s shield competition.
Roger was an distinguished author and wrote a number of books on Slavery. In 1985 he received the Airey Neave Award for Research into Freedom under National Laws. He was also a member of the Council of Anti-Slavery International. Chris Elgood ran the shooting at Marlborough House School for nine years between 2001 and 2010. He always sought to promote and drive forward the sport in the best possible way. It was he who came up with the idea of the ‘Cadet Pairs’ competition and he very kindly paid to commission the Pardoe cup in honour of the Association’s former Chairman and Vice President, Mike Pardoe. Furthermore, he generously sponsored both the Bisley Prep School Tournament as well as the England tour to Scotland in 2009. Indeed, it was his team from Marlborough House who won the Tournament in 2007 as well as setting a record score of 198 (ex 200) in the Pardoe cup competition; a record that stood for 6 years until Ardvreck surpassed it in 2014.
Outside of shooting he was a keen artist and also set up his own Education consultancy, Elgood Effective Learning, in 1972. More about his company can be found by going to the firm’s website…………..

NUMBER 123 MAY 2019
Results, Individual success and ‘Top Shooters’ Competition.
Once again it is good to see our trophies being won by a variety of schools and, whilst some have been retained this term, six have changed hands. Congratulations to Sedbergh Prep, and their coach Ian Christy, who are the first winners of the Geoffrey Place Trophy in its revised format (now for ‘supported’ air rifle at 10m). Two of the shield competitions were won by narrow margins, 4 points in case of the St Patrick’s shield and 2 points in the St Andrew’s shield competition.
In the Pardoe Cup competition (U12 pairs) Tabitha Evans remains the leader as no one has bettered the 97 she shot in the Autumn term. It remains to be seen whether anyone can eclipse that this term though?
Based on the scores achieved over the last two terms I can now announce who will go into this term’s “shoot off” to find the Top Shooter for rifle and air rifle of 2019.
Air Rifle Congratulations to ..............
Tom Cowling, Hugo Lynch, Henry O’Connell and Charlie Samme – all from Feltonfleet.
Emily Dolby, Eve Robinson and Livi Ross - all from Sedbergh Prep.
Max Bailey and Joe Kennerley both from Terra Nova School. And A.Cottingham from Dean Close Jnr.
Rifle Congratulations to ..............
Oona Aiken, Ross Mulley, Adam Rice and Rohan Van der Ven - all from Holmewood House.
Keira Butler, Lucy Carby and Rowan Piper – all from Sedbergh Prep. Edward Britton (Aldro), Eugenie Dunbar-Johnson (Wellesley House) and Isaac Ripley (St Andrew’s Eastbourne).
Best of luck with your three ‘final decider’ match cards!
AGM 2019.
This year’s meeting is fast approaching and will take place on Thursday 30th May.
All coaches are welcome to attend. If you have any points you would like to see raised please contact our Secretary, Mary Eveleigh, (email [email protected]) who can put the item on the Agenda. Please also let Mary know if you are planning to attend so that we can plan the numbers for catering. Likewise if you have any dietary requirements. Many thanks to Didier Prongue and Mr M. Piercey (HM of The New Beacon) for agreeing to host this year’s meeting.
Welcome.
It is good to announce another member of the PSRA, namely Shrewsbury House. A warm welcome to them and their coach Jeanette Leivers. Jeanette is also coaching the shooting at Daneshill so it will be good to see teams entered from both these two schools once again.

Results and Individual success.
It is good to see a significant number of different schools taking the top honours this term. No less than 7 of our trophies have changed hands which is most encouraging and entirely healthy. Whilst congratulating Terra Nova and Leweston on retaining the St David’s and the St Andrew’s shields respectively it is good to a different winner in the St Patrick’s shield competition. So congratulations to Holmewood House and their coaches Malcolm Priestley and Bryn Groves on coaching their youngsters to success. I think I’m right in saying that this is the first time that Holmewood have won the St Patrick’s since their success in the mid 1980’s with Michael Lawrence - winning the shield in both Spring 1984 and Spring 1985.
In terms of individual success I should also like to congratulate Benjy Rampe and Tabitha Evans in the Rifle competition. Benjy was top scorer with a perfect 100 out of 100 and Tabitha’s 97 was the highest Cadet pair target which will therefore count towards this year’s Pardoe Prize competition for the best target shot by an Under 12 pupil.
Welcome.
It is good to announce a new member of the PSRA, namely Sherborne Prep. A warm welcome to them and their coach Alastair Poulain and I hope that you links with our Association will be both enjoyable and rewarding.
I must also welcome 4 new coaches who have taken over the reins at their schools, so welcome to Michelle Vincent (Terra Nova), Owen Venables (Ashfold), Adam Davies (Beeston Hall) and Guy Kinder (Port Regis).
Another competition.
In view of the popularity of the supported Rifle competition we have decided to introduce a similar one for Air Rifles. So from next term, we will be offering a competition for SUPPORTED air rifles. The format will be…….
The committee have decided to re-designate the Geoffrey Place Trophy to the winner of this competition.
Subscriptions.
Just a word of thanks to the Schools who have renewed their subscription with us for another year. However, I gather that there are still quite a number who have not yet done so, so please could I ask you to make a discreet enquiry to see if your school is one of them. The subscription letter went out to your Headmaster in November.
2019 Entry form.
I shall be sending this out to coaches at the start of next term so that you can let me know your requirements for the following year.

NEWSLETTER number 121 JULY 2018
Results and Individual success.
Whilst a quick glance at this term’s Results shows no significant change at the top of our competitions, it was encouraging to see a number of schools improve their scores markedly from last term. So well done to Aldro, Dean Close Junior and Gresham’s Prep who managed to lift their aggregates by 26, 33 and 53 points respectively! It was also good to see the bar pushed ever higher with two new records set, so well done to Feltonfleet for raising the St Patrick’s shield record by 1 point and to Sedbergh Prep who raised the record for the Geoffrey Place Trophy to 276 (ex 300). Congratulations to all of you.
As in previous years, the summer term sees the culmination of three competitions which reward the best shooters in Prep Schools. So congratulations to Chris Bitzakidis and Tom Galanty from Feltonfleet and Helen Robinson from Terra Nova. Helen wins the “Top Shooter” award for Air Rifle with a total of 291 (ex 300). Chris wins the “Top Shooter” rifle award for scoring an impressive 299 (ex 300). Finally, well done to Tom as he wins the “Pardoe Prize” for the best card shot by an Under 12 pupil this year – a “possible” no less!!
A threat to our Sport!
A second reading of the Offensive Weapons Bill took place on June 27th. This bill constitutes a major threat to target shooting, and could, potentially, set a malign precedent for other shooting sports since it seeks to prohibit two types of rifle for which there is no evidence of misuse in the UK.
Please, it is important that you write to or email your Member of Parliament to express your concern as soon as you possibly can. You can find further details and guidance as to WHAT to write by going to our website……

PSRA Coaching Manual.
Also on our website is a superb coaching manual that has been written by Nigel Curtis. It runs to over 50 pages and contains a wealth of information that coaches, of whatever discipline, will find hugely useful. Enormous thanks to Nigel for compiling this and passing on the wisdom he has accumulated over many years of shooting.
Home Office Approval fees.
Coaches at schools with .22 Rifle shooting will be alarmed to hear of the HUGE RISE in fees for Home Office Approval that have recently been proposed. This fee used to be £84 but this will rise to £384 for a renewal ( valid for 6 years) and £444 for a School that is making its first application. Other fees are due to be introduced for schools wishing to register a change such as a change of Secretary, range or Club name.
Thanks and appreciations.
Change is ever present in our lives today but I have to say that this term sees more than ever before with no less than FIVE coaches retiring or moving on to pastures new. Next term sees Sarah Bray and Lisa Luckyn Malone (both coaches at Feltonfleet) moving to take on new roles and we wish them well. We also say a fond farewell to Chrissy Monksummers who retires from Port Regis after 11 years as their coach. Ashfold’s Headmaster, Michael Chitty is also retiring, having run the shooting there for the last 21 years. But perhaps the biggest shock waves will be felt in Cheshire as Nigel Curtis steps down from coaching at Terra Nova. Nigel has coached TN pupils for 28 years and in that time he has seen them win no less than 100 PSRA and National U14 titles. To underline his versatility, he switched from .22 Rifle to .177 Air Rifle a few years ago when the Headmaster informed him that his range was to be commandeered for a new classroom block! Since then, Terra Nova has established itself as THE Top Prep School for Air Rifle shooting in the country, setting many new records along the way. Mind you, this should come as no surprise really for a man who was the British Masters Champion in 1992, BFTA Champion in 1993 and also won 3 world titles with the GB Team in Field Target competitions.
So to all of you, I’d like to extend a word of thanks for your loyal support of the PSRA and all you have done for your charges over the years and the best of luck in all your future ventures.

Results and Top Shooters.
This term saw the introduction of our new format with teams of six, instead of 8, in both the main shield competitions. So congratulations to Feltonfleet, Terra Nova and Casterton on setting new records! Thanks should go to the coaches of ALL schools who took part though as normal timetables were badly disrupted by the snow and it proved even harder to practise and meet competition deadlines as a result. Team coaches in the pistol competition reported similar difficulties and this certainly contributed to the outcome. Nevertheless, congratulations to Aldro, and their coach Tony Bracci, on winning back the St Andrew’s Shield once again from Leweston who have held the trophy for the last two years.
In terms of individual success I should like to mention Freddie Lawry from Feltonfleet who, yet again, shot another possible in the St Patrick’s Shield. This seldom happens and I can’t recall many achieving this in the last thirty or so years that I have been PSRA scorer. For the record, I noted that he has only dropped 4 points in ALL his PSRA and UFL competition cards this season which means he has achieved an amazing average of 99.3 on his match cards so far. Well done Freddie!
Based on the scores achieved over the last two terms I can now announce who will go into this term’s “shoot off” to find the Top Shooter for rifle and air rifle of 2018.
Air Rifle Congratulations to ..............
Helen Robinson, Ashley Munroe, Felix Kershaw, Joseph Kennerley, Thomas Connolly, Zeb Forde-Smith, Max Bailey and William Wooton all from Terra Nova School and Rowan Piper and Beth Cosgrove from Casterton.
Rifle Congratulations to ..............
Freddie Lawry, Laura Galanty, Chris Bitzakidis, Charlie Clayton and Caius Luckyn-Malone all from Feltonfleet. Lucy Andrews, Maxime Flesch and Theo Boyle from Holmewood House. Sarah-Michelle Clear and James Zhou from St Andrew’s Eastbourne.

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 119 DECEMBER 2017
Results.
There may have been little change in the names of the Schools winning top honours in both the rifle and air rifle competitions this term but this time it was good to see that the winning margin in the St Patrick’s shield was a mere 10 points. This time last year it was no less than 48 points! So well done to Holmewood House for running Feltonfleet a little closer this term and winning back the St Huberts Trophy in the process. In individual success I should like to mention the top two scorers in the Rifle competition, so well done Freddie Lawry and Tom Galanty (Feltonfleet) for scoring 100 out of 100 on your match cards. Particular praise ought perhaps to go to Tom as he is still Under 12 and so goes forward as this term’s contender for the Pardoe prize (awarded annually for the top U12 scorer of the year). Another person worthy of praise is Darcy Dryden, from Leweston, who shot a notable 97 (ex 100) in the Air Pistol competition which is something that only six people have managed to achieve in the last 15 years. Well done all three of you.
Team numbers.
Many thanks to all the coaches who responded to my questionnaire canvassing views on team numbers in both our Shield competitions. The overriding view is that we should move to teams of SIX so that is what will now happen.
Starting next term, both the St Patrick’s and St David’s Shield competitions will be ex 600.
The other two associated competitions, the Hammond Cup and the Geoffrey Place Trophy, will also change and will now be contested by teams of THREE individuals (ex 300).
These changes should encourage more teams to participate and will also lead to closer competitions in both disciplines.
Welcome.
I am pleased to announce two new members of the PSRA. It is good to welcome both Daneshill and Surbiton High School as members of the Association and I hope that your links with us will be both rewarding and enjoyable for all concerned.
Badge bargains!
With the aforementioned reductions in team numbers I can now announce a very tempting offer on two of our enamelled badges. For a limited time, and while stocks last, you can now purchase the smart BLACK viii and iv badges at HALF PRICE. This means that both can be bought for just £1 each (plus P&P at cost).
These are particularly handsome badges and can be obtained from our Secretary, Mary Eveleigh, who also sells our PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATES together with the corresponding badges. See below.

Congratulations, once again, to our two top schools Feltonfleet and Terra Nova for retaining their trophies in this term’s Shield competitions. In other competitions too there was little change with most holders retaining their cups. The one exception was the Hammond Cup which this term was won by St Andrew’s, so well done to them for winning this competition for the first time.
Individual Success and Prizes.
Congratulations to the two who shot “possibles” in this term’s competitions, namely Angelina Ivanyuzhenkova (Feltonfleet) and Ella Pochin (Terra Nova). Clearly both of them held their nerve under match conditions to achieve perfect scores in rifle and air rifle competitions respectively.
In the Pardoe Competition there were three contenders namely Benjy Rampe, Chris Bitzakidis and Freddie Lawry. All of these shot a 99 at one stage or other in this year’s U12 competition. In the event, I was unable to separate two of the cards as both were equally good so this year the Pardoe Prize is shared between Chris Bitzakidis and Freddie Lawry ( Feltonfleet). Congratulations to both of you and you should each be receiving a cheque for £15 in the near future.
Congratulations similarly to Milly Charnock (Terra Nova) and William Hennessy (Feltonfleet) who are this year’s Top Shooters. Both shot outstandingly well to beat off strong competition from the “Top ten” who were named in the last Newsletter (April 2017). Milly scored an impressive 288 (ex 300) on her three match cards whilst William shot consistently well scoring 297 out of 300. Well done to both of you and you should be receiving your £100 cheques in the very near future.
AGM.
Thanks to Mike Eveleigh who arranged, once again, for us to hold our annual meeting at the headquarters of BASC in Rossett, North Wales.
A good meeting was held despite the small turnout. Amongst the topics discussed was the proposal to join the BSSC, the cost of the PSRA subscription, our dwindling membership and the decreasing number of competition entries.
Anyone wishing to find out more on these matters and what was decided on is welcome to request a copy of the Minutes by contacting our Secretary, Mary Eveleigh .Email [email protected]
Competition Entries and Team numbers. YOUR VIEWS PLEASE………………..…………...
In view of the low numbers of schools entering our termly competitions it was suggested we might look to REDUCE the numbers from eight to SIX in each team contesting the St Patrick’s and St David’s Shield competitions. This would essentially mean the following:
We want to run competitions that YOU, the membership, wish to enter and having more teams participating would clearly make it more enjoyable for all concerned.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could feedback your thoughts by the END OF SEPTEMBER please. Email [email protected] . Many thanks.
Golden couple.
Congratulations to Mike & Mary Eveleigh
on their success in the recent Supershot Challenge, held in Jersey.
I gather that Mary was Lady’s Champion and Mike won the Veteran’s Gold medal. In addition,
they also won Silver in the Team competition so well done to both of you!
A picture of them both has come my way – although Mike appears to be more weighed down with his success than his wife!!

This will, once again, take place during the Summer Half term break and, as always, all members are welcome to attend. This year it will be held at the BASC Headquarters in Rossett ( LL12 0HL) on Thursday 1st June. The meeting will start at 2pm and should be over by 3:30. For anyone coming from afar you are welcome to join us for lunch beforehand.
It would be help us to know in advance of any members who are hoping to attend. Please let our Secretary, Mary Eveleigh, know beforehand so that we can make the necessary arrangements, especially with regards to lunch numbers.
Please also let us know if there is any matter you wish to raise or see discussed at the meeting so that it can be put on the Agenda. Thank you.
Results and “Top Shooters”.
Congratulations to Holmewood House on winning the St Huberts Trophy this term and also to Leweston for retaining the St Andrew’s Shield. Sadly there has, once again, been little change in the other two shield competitions. Congratulations nevertheless to both Feltonfleet and Terra Nova for retaining their position at the top of the St Patrick’s and St David’s shield competitions respectively.
In terms of individual performance I can now announce who our “Top Shooters” are for 2017. This is based on their efforts in both this and last term’s shield competitions. Congratulations therefore to the following…….,
In Air Rifle, well done (in alphabetical order) to ...............
Julien Bertolino, Milly Charnock, Emily Dalton, Joe Kennerley, Deena Leese, Ben Lees-Jones, Oliver Mitchell, Ella Pochin, Helen Robinson and William Wootton. All are pupils at Terra Nova School.
They all scored 182 or more (ex 200) in their PSRA cards so far this year.
In Rifle, well done (in alphabetical order) to............
Lucy Andrews William Banks, Nick Sanders and Tatiana Hissey – all from Holmewood House.
Chris Bitzakidis, Charlie Clayton, William Hennessy, Angelina Ivanyuzhenkova, Fredy Lawry, Caius Luckyn-Malone and Lexy Paulton – all from Feltonfleet.
They all scored 193 or more (ex 200) in their PSRA cards so far this year.
All of these now go forward to the next stage which will be to shoot THREE further match cards next term which will then be used to select the overall winner in each discipline. Both “Top Shooters” will receive a prize of £100 for their efforts which, we hope, will be an incentive for them to further develop their shooting skills in the future.
The Pardoe Prize.
Last term it was Benjy Rampe (Feltonfleet) who was our top U12 scorer who shot a 99 on his match card. This term it is Chris Bitzakidis, also from Feltonfleet, who also scored a 99. It remains to be seen whether anyone can surpass their score by getting a 100 in this term’s competition – or indeed a “better” 99. Watch this space to see who will win this year’s prize for the best Under 12 Rifle shooter of 2017.
Price rise.
I have just taken delivery of my latest batch of PSRA medals. Unfortunately, these are now costing us more and so I have had to increase the price. These will now retail at £4 per medal (+ P&P at cost). They make a superb internal prize though so you might like to order some and hold them in reserve to award as you see fit?

Congratulations to Leweston on winning the St Andrew’s Shield in this term’s Pistol competition. It is good to see this result as it represents a “first” on a couple of accounts. Not only is it the first time the School has triumphed in this competition under their coach Alan Brown, but it is also, to the best of my knowledge, the first time that one of our trophies has been won by an all-girl team. So well done to Alan as well as the four girls –
Lily Armor, Elektra Covell, Issy Colwell and Darcy Dryden.
Sadly, on the rifle and air rifle front it has been very much a case of “Déjà vu” as none of the trophies have changed hands this term. This too is a “first” and certainly hasn’t happened before in the 28 years I have been scoring PSRA competitions. This is a great shame and a situation, I hope, that won’t be repeated too often.
That said, I should still send congratulations to Feltonfleet and Terra Nova and their coaches, Hylton Adcroft and Nigel Curtis, on their superb coaching and the children themselves who have excelled once again. Well done to all of you.
Subscriptions.
Many thanks to those who have already responded to our Subscription letter by renewing their membership for another year. It certainly helps us greatly when Schools reply promptly as it allows us to know our financial position before the accounts are audited as well as reducing the number of “reminder letters” we have to send out!
Thanks also to Mary Eveleigh, our Interim Treasurer, who has dealt with all the admin on this front.
“The Pardoe Prize”.
As with last year we will, once again, be awarding this at the end of the academic year to the best Under 12 Rifle Shooter. This term’s top scorer was Benjy Rampe from Feltonfleet who scored an excellent 99 in this term’s Cadet Pairs competition. Well done to Benjy and your card goes forward as the best shot so far. As before, it remains to be seen whether any of the other Under 12’s can match that score or indeed go one better. Only time will tell!

Results and records.
Congratulations to our two shield winners Feltonfleet and Terra Nova on not only retaining their trophies but also achieving superb scores too. Terra Nova’s 767 follows on, hot on the heels of last term’s 768 which was, I believe, their 2nd highest total whilst Feltonfleet’s 790 is their BEST EVER SCORE in the St Patrick’s shield. So well done to both coaches Hylton Adcroft and Nigel Curtis. Well done similarly to Casterton (Sedbergh Prep) and their coach Ian Christie on winning the Hammond cup this term. In the process they managed to establish a new record, raising the bar by no less than 13 points.
Individual Success and Prizes.
Congratulations to the three who shot “possibles” in this term’s competitions, namely Bertie Clayton (Feltonfleet), Adelaide Sillar and Milly Charnock (Terra Nova). To have done so under match conditions is a real achievement, especially if it is on the fiendishly difficult AIR 3/89 10m Air targets!
Likewise to William Hennessy (Feltonfleet) who wins the inaugural Pardoe Prize. William shot a 99 in this term’s Cadet Pairs competition (Rifle) which is the best Under 12 card of the year. So well done William and a prize of £25 is on its way to you. This prize was introduced thanks to the generosity of Mike Pardoe, (late Vice President) who left money to the PSRA in his will two years ago. It was felt that, like the Pardoe Cup, this would be an excellent way of recognising and encouraging youngsters in their shooting with .22 rifle.
Congratulations similarly to Helen Robinson (Terra Nova) and Arthur Lewis (St Andrew’s) who are this year’s Top Shooters. Both shot outstandingly well to beat off strong competition from the other “Top ten” who were named in the last Newsletter (April 2016). Helen scored a superb 293 (ex 300) on her three match cards whilst Arthur kept his nerve to shoot three consecutive “possibles”, thus scoring a maximum 300 out of 300. Well done to both of you and you should be receiving your £100 cheques in the very near future.
AGM and Shooting workshop.
Thanks to Terra Nova School for hosting this year’s AGM meeting in the recent Half term. A special mention also to coach Nigel Curtis who ran an excellent workshop in the morning, highlighting some of his techniques and strategies for coaching youngsters in shooting. For those who attended this was a valuable forum for sharing ideas and information as well as seeing the superb facility that pupils at Terra Nova now enjoy in their new Air Rifle range.
In the meeting that followed, we discussed a number of matters relating to both the PSRA as well as the Under 14 League. We also heard more from Mike Eveleigh about the possibility of tighter legislation that may yet see all Junior shooting, for those aged Under 14, banned! Whilst previous proposals, after the atrocities at Hungerford and Dunblane, were successfully countered it does show that this threat has not gone away and remains an ongoing concern to us all. I should like to take this opportunity to thank Mike and Mary for their ongoing efforts in representing the PSRA at various meetings and events to ensure that our existence is recognised and acknowledged in the face of proposed changes to the law.
Minutes of our AGM are available and can be obtained by contacting the Secretary Mary Eveleigh – [email protected]
NUMBER 115 JULY 2016

NUMBER 103 JULY 2012
London 2012, a new trophy and yet more records.
How fitting that this term sees the introduction of our latest trophy the Hammond Cup. In little over a week, our president Jonathan Hammond will be starting his quest at the London Olympics shooting for Team GB in both the 50m prone and 3 position events. There to watch him will be Tim Verlander, his first coach, over 20 years ago whilst a pupil at Ardvreck School. Jonathan competed in the last Olympics too but, to the best of my knowledge, he is the only former Prep School pupil to have risen to such heights, shooting for his country with .22 rifle. Jonathan, we all wish you the very best of luck.
This term we have introduced a new cup in our competitions with a “supported rifle” category. This is for teams of 4 and forms a part of the main ( St Patrick’s) shield competition. A quick look at the results will show you that the first winners are Gollop School (Llandovery) who only joined us this year. So congratulations to Hylton Adcroft, their coach, and all the pupils concerned. The fact that six schools took part underlines the popularity of this decision and I would like to extend this to air rifles too, just as soon as there is sufficient interest within the St David’s shield entry list.
A closer examination of the results sheet will reveal that Terra Nova have done it again! This term they have not only retained the St David’s shield but set another record score. I can’t recall a school establishing two record scores in consecutive terms ever before, so congratulations to the 8 pupils and their coach Nigel Curtis. One of the pupils, Alice-May Bolshaw, deserves a particular mention however as she scored 99 which sets a new record too; so congratulations Alice-May!
Scotland v England U14 International.
This was once again held as a postal match this term. The Scottish team comprised ten pupils from Ardvreck School (Thomasina Bowyer-Bower, Alec Bruce-Gardyne , Fergus Findlay, Cameron Grieve, Charlie Hogg, Emily Inglis, Henry Lithgow, Pippa Macdonald, Charlie Robinson & Jemma Stewart) whilst the English team had pupils from four Prep schools south of the border – Aldro (Charles Donaldson and Hamish Morrison), Feltonfleet ( Oliver Armstrong, Alex Bitzakidis, Matthew Buxton-Smith, Mackenna Edwards-Mair and Nicholas Phizackerley), Holmewood House ( Ed Gittins and Toby Risebrow ) and St Andrew’s ( Ollie Rosson-Jones). In the event, victory went to England by just two points - England 798 : Scotland 796. This is the first time that England have won the event and it certainly would not have happened without the huge contribution of the “Feltonfleet five” who all shot “possibles” and didn’t drop a single point - a fantastic achievement. From now on their coach, Hylton Adcroft, ought perhaps to be known as Quinton!! Many congratulations to all those who took part.
New member.
A warm welcome to St Neots School, Eversley who have recently joined us. The school are in fact former PSRA members and it is indeed good to welcome them and their coach, Rupert Loch, back once again as this seldom happens; so welcome aboard Rupert and I hope your school’s association with us is both a long and rewarding one.
